Keys that repeat, stick or stop responding are usually mechanical rather than software. Crumbs and dust under a key are enough to cause it, and once liquid has been through a keyboard the fault rarely settles down on its own.

A1707 and A1990 use the butterfly mechanism that Apple later replaced. The A1398 predates it and uses the more durable scissor design.
