What iOS shows after the swap

Nothing unusual. Apple’s battery check, and the Parts and Service History screen that reports it, start with the iPhone XR and XS. On the iPhone 8 there is no “Unknown” part message after the swap, and Battery Health reads the new battery as it would an original one.

About the iPhone 8 replacement battery

This is a complete replacement battery for the iPhone 8: a new lithium-ion polymer cell with its own IC board and connector, supplied without adhesive. It fits as a straight swap, with no soldering.

The iPhone 8 was released in 2017. At 1821 mAh it is the smallest battery in the iPhone 8 and X line-up. The iPhone 8 is opened from the screen side, so the display comes off before the battery can be reached.

  • This is an aftermarket replacement battery, not an Apple original part.

Compatible iPhone 8 model numbers

This battery fits iPhone 8 models A1863, A1905 and A1906. They are the same phone sold in different regions, so one battery covers all of them.

It does not fit other iPhone models: the iPhone SE 2 battery has the same 1821 mAh capacity but a different connector, the iPhone 8 Plus uses a 2691 mAh battery and the iPhone 7 uses a 1960 mAh battery. Check the model number in Settings > General > About, or use Apple’s guide to identifying your iPhone.

How to fit the iPhone 8 replacement battery

For technicians and experienced repairers. Work on an ESD-safe bench, and never lever against a lithium battery: a punctured cell can catch fire.

  1. Prepare the bench. Precision screwdrivers, a heat mat or heat gun, a suction handle, plastic picks and fine tweezers.
  2. Open the phone from the screen. Heat and lift the display, then unplug the battery connector before touching anything else.
  3. Remove the old battery. Pull the adhesive tabs out slowly at a low angle, then lift the battery out without bending or puncturing it.
  4. Prepare the frame. Apply fresh battery adhesive strips, which are not supplied, where the old battery sat.
  5. Fit the new battery. Line it up, press it into place, and reconnect it.
  6. Test and close. Check the phone boots and charges, then reseal it with fresh display adhesive.

If you would rather hand the job over, GA Tech NZ offers in-house iPhone 8 battery replacement, and our repair tools range covers the bench kit.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a complete battery?

Yes. It is a complete battery with its own IC board and connector, so it fits as a straight swap with no soldering.

Will iOS show the battery as Unknown?

No. Apple’s battery check starts with the iPhone XR and XS, so the iPhone 8 shows no Unknown part message.

What will Battery Health show?

The new battery’s maximum capacity, as normal. The iPhone 8 does not check whether a battery is genuine.

Do I need to solder?

No. It is a complete battery, so it swaps in without soldering.

Is the iPhone 8 battery the same as the iPhone SE 2 battery?

No. Both hold 1821 mAh, but the connector is different, so an iPhone SE 2 battery does not fit the iPhone 8.

Is battery adhesive included?

No. The battery comes without adhesive, so fit fresh battery adhesive strips when you install it.

Which iPhone 8 models does it fit?

Model numbers A1863, A1905 or A1906. Check yours in Settings, then General, then About.

Is this an Apple original battery?

No. It is an aftermarket battery, not an Apple part.

What warranty comes with it?

6 months against manufacturing defects. Physical damage, punctures and damage caused while fitting are not covered.
