Replacement keyboards for the MacBook Pro 13-inch

Keys that repeat, stick or stop responding are mechanical rather than software. Crumbs and dust under a key are enough to cause it, and once liquid has been through a keyboard the fault rarely settles down on its own.

This range spans both of Apple’s keyboard designs. The A1708 and A2159 use the butterfly mechanism, which is the one prone to dust failures. The A2251, A2289 and the M1 or M2 A2338 use the scissor design that replaced it. They are not interchangeable.

Buying in New Zealand

Keyboards for this range are held in New Zealand in US layout. Everything else for this range is under MacBook Pro 13-inch Spare Parts, and fitting can be booked through the repairs service.

Orders placed before the 2pm cut-off dispatch the same working day and reach most New Zealand addresses overnight.

Questions answered

How much does a MacBook Pro 13-inch keyboard replacement cost?

Fitting starts from $164.00. Tell us the model number from the underside for an exact figure.

Which keyboard fits my MacBook Pro 13-inch?

Match the model number on the underside: A1708, A2159, A2251, A2289, or A2338 for the M1 and M2. The butterfly and scissor designs do not swap between generations.

Can a single key be replaced?

A loose keycap can be refitted. A failed switch underneath, or a keyboard that has had liquid through it, means replacing the assembly.

Is this the butterfly keyboard that Apple recalled?

The A1708 and A2159 use the butterfly mechanism covered by Apple’s service programme. That programme has now closed for most models, which is why replacement is usually the practical route.

Does this include the top case?

These are keyboard assemblies. If the top case or battery tray is damaged as well, book it in and we will quote the whole job.
