Buttons that stop clicking

Side buttons fail from use rather than accident. The power button on a phone in daily service is pressed thousands of times, and eventually the switch under it stops registering or needs a hard press. Volume rockers go the same way, often one direction before the other.

These parts are supplied as a flex assembly rather than a loose switch. On most models the same flex carries the mute switch and, depending on the phone, the microphone or flash contacts.

Before assuming the button

A phone that will not wake can look like a dead power button when the actual fault is the battery or the screen. Check the phone responds to a charger and shows signs of life first. Batteries are under iPhone battery and displays under iPhone screen.

No. The buttons sit on a shared flex assembly, so the assembly is replaced as one piece.

Generally yes. The flex runs deep inside the chassis and needs several other components moved to reach it.

Check the battery and display first. A dead phone far more often means a failed cell than a failed button.
