What if the pull tab snaps?

Work isopropyl alcohol under the cell to weaken the adhesive and lift it with a plastic tool. Never bend or puncture a battery to free it.

Can I use ordinary double-sided tape?

You can, but the next person to open the device will have no pull tabs and a much harder job.
