Keys that repeat, stick or stop responding are usually mechanical rather than software. Crumbs and dust under a key are enough to cause it, and once liquid has been through a keyboard the fault rarely settles down on its own.

This was the first butterfly keyboard Apple shipped, and it is the least tolerant of dust of any of them. A single trapped particle is enough to kill a key.
