The proximity sensor blanks the display when the phone is held to your ear. When it fails, the screen stays lit against your face and calls end themselves, or the mute gets pressed by a cheekbone. The ambient light sensor on the same assembly is what adjusts brightness to the room, so a failure there shows up as a screen stuck at one brightness.
Check this before ordering
The most common cause is not a failed sensor at all. A screen protector fitted with the sensor cutout misaligned, or a replacement display where the sensor bracket was not transferred across, produces exactly the same symptoms. Both are worth ruling out first, and both cost nothing to check.
