Choosing an iPhone case
Case choice is a trade-off between bulk and protection, and the right answer depends on how the phone actually gets used rather than on how much coverage sounds reassuring.
Slim and clear. Minimal bulk, keeps the finish visible, and absorbs scuffs rather than drops. Suited to a phone that lives in a pocket and rarely leaves a desk.
Rugged and shockproof. Raised bezels and reinforced corners, because corners are where a dropped phone lands. Worth the bulk for site work, trades and anyone with a cracked screen already behind them.
Wallet and card holder. Carries cards and doubles as a stand. Adds thickness, and cards sitting between the phone and a charging pad will block wireless charging.
Magnetic. Snaps to car mounts, wallets and charging pads. Only worth choosing if you already use magnetic accessories, and the magnet strength matters more than the case itself.
Screen protectors: what the finishes actually do
A protector is a replaceable surface layer. It stops scratches and takes the first impact, but it does not make a screen unbreakable, and a hard enough drop breaks the display underneath an intact protector.
Clear tempered glass. The default. Highest clarity, closest feel to the bare screen.
Privacy. Darkens the display when viewed off-axis, which suits commuting and open-plan offices. It costs some brightness head-on.
Matte or anti-glare. Cuts reflections and fingerprints outdoors, at the cost of a slightly softened image.
Camera lens protectors. Separate items covering the rear camera glass, which is the part that cracks first on a face-up drop.
Making a case and protector work together
The common failure is a protector that lifts at the edges once a case is fitted, because the case wall sits on the protector’s edge rather than clearing it. Look for a case with a raised lip cut for a protector, and fit the protector first. Curved-edge displays need a protector shaped for that exact model, since a flat one will never seat properly at the sides.
Identifying your iPhone before you order
Open Settings, then General, then About, and read the Model Name. That name, not the release year and not the screen size, is what the categories above are organised by. Where one accessory genuinely fits more than one iPhone, the listing names every model it covers, so a part covering several handsets is not a mistake.
If the iPhone is already damaged
Accessories protect a working phone.
